Lights

By

I see the moon tonight in its beautiful, incomplete form –

A half-disc towering above the city lights

Unattached, untainted,

Beautiful in its incomplete form.

I see the moon tonight and some lone stars, just as I’ve always seen a thousand miles away –

And I remember,

How we all are under the same skies,

A blanket of life and air covering us.

But we often don’t see and are distracted by the glimmering city lights,

The lonesome stars would wish we’d look up more often –

at their silent, non-intrusive brilliance,

but these city lights never go off,

And how do you see true light unless there’s stillness and a jolt?

Perhaps in the whispers of a dream,

under warm blankets,

In memories of childhood songs, (I see the moon, the moon sees me, God bless the moon and God bless me)

And on particularly strange days when we happen to look up beyond the city lights.

I read a poem tonight by a lovely, infrequent writer.

You should write more often, Kunmi.
