So there’s this world we happen to have created for ourselves,a world where pictures and ‘about you’s’ determine who we are, a world where the number of likes and followers we have determines how prestigious we are…a world where we can talk to virtually everybody,it’s an easy world, it’s a fun world but still its not our real world…

…ok let’s burst the bubble though I’m sure you all know the world I’m talking about already – the social media and social networking sites. I really dont know where to start cos there’s so much going on in this world.

Everything they say has its merits and demerits and I guess it’s true for our beloved world too,ok,lets do it this way…merits and demerits of the virtual world…ill just mention a few though and for this purpose,the virtual world is the world of social networking sites,numerous as they are and the real world is, you know, the REAL world…

Merits :

• communication obviously : i guess this is singularly one of the most important reasons for this existence of this world. True,it helps us relate well with other people and here,we get the opportunity of speaking with people we would hitherto not have spoken to in the real world and yes,it has bulit a world of friendships and long lasting relationships..
• A place where we can express ourselves : expression,they say,is one thing we humans like to do…and i think the virtual world has provided so great an outlet for this,you could express who you are with your pictures,likes an all.
• Information : and how vital this is especially in this age of ours,there are so many things to know and clearly, the means too.

So let’s flip over to the other side of the coin, I’m quite excited about this side so im not bulleting the points 🙂

I’ll like to call this…’LETS LOOK UP FROM OUR PHONES AND LAPTOPS AND WHAT HAVE YOU’ 🙂

So undeniably we get kinda addicted to all these stuffs,you know,staying hours on your phone and then mom calls, you answer, but you forget to go or you don’t want to cos ‘you’re busy’. Or how do you explain walking on the road and texting,look out,there’s a tree! Thing is, I’m so guilty too,at times,hours speed by me and I’m like ‘God! what have I done with my life’…for most of us,it might not be that bad,we could always control it and yes we’re doing important stuffs online. Don’t get me wrong social networking sites is not the devil and it does have its positives,look up.

Look up,yes look up from your phones…take a look around you. You never know who you might meet on the way today,but you can’t see cos you’re texting or doing something on your phone. In some extreme cases,people most especially teenagers commit sucide just because they feel worthless,and where does this worth come from,from the castles they’ve built on facebook and so if their picture doesn’t get any likes,they feel, oh,i’m not beautiful enough or if they have just twenty followers on twitter whilst following a hundred,they go ‘ok ok, I get it, im not cool at all’…sounds funny but that’s actually the world we’ve created,where worth is summarized in words and pictures…

Nowadays,we can’t even take a perfectly normal picture anymore,we have the mindset of instagram at the back of our minds, and so it must be perfect,and if not,we go on the editing spree. I’m not paranoid,I’m just trying to look deeper…does that mean we cant be our true selves anymore,why not post an ugly picture of yourself online(ok just for the record, I dont think I’m going to do that,and that’s what I’m saying) what’s even our definition of ugly! So we go ahead and make ourselves look perfect and construct the best grammar posssible,cos we can’t afford to say the wrong things…

My pretty-twinie sister and I conjured quite a weird illusion…imagine if on your birthday you get transported into the virtual world and the virtual world becomes the real world. So your friends are going to wish you a happy birthday cos it’s appearing on your profile which is your face,even those who wouldn’t have remembered or those who barely know you would say Hbd and then go away,just like that, how convinient!

Abbreviations are the funniest thing ever…we say lol when we’re frowning and rotfl when we’re actually in class sitting and not paying attention…

So where am i going with all this…here’s where – look up,you only have to look down when necessary not all the time. Live your life,not on the internet. Love, laugh,make the best of the moments you have before they slip into memories, breathe in the sunshine,feel the warmth…

And I’m not oblivious of the wonderful people i wuldn’t have known without the internet…you guys are the advantages to me but then once or twice,we have to admit that things are more real than in the virtual world and should be lived as such.

so take a needed break from facebook,twitter,instagram,whatsapp,kik,you tube,tumblr,pinterset,opera,i could go on and on…and face the reality of life,or is this our reality of life???

all I’m saying is,people,be moderate with it all…don’t be so obssessed you wouldn’t have time for other things…
