So here’s the thing…I’ve been wondering,’why do most Nigerians love partying so much?’ and I’m quite sure we don’t have it in our genes. But looking at the general turn-ups at parties, I most likely am rest assured that this is it….Nigerians are a party people!
But its not that bad if only I don’t usually feel out of place, worst case scenario,I would fall asleep at the said party…so is it me or is what I’m saying true? There’s always so much noise, much more than it is needed,I mean,we get it,we’re happy and all but really things should be done in all modesty…well, maybe that’s just the way it is *shrugs
Last party I attended, I’ll say it was sort of compulsory cos it was a family event and here’s an account of my experience right from the moment we arrived at ‘the scene’
…I could hear the sounds of loud drumming and music from some miles away and then I sighted the mandatory canopies without which a statement of a ‘big party’ cannot be made in Nigeria. So then all things being equal, I made for a seat…and by the way, the party was to start by twelve and that was already a few minutes past twelve and yet people hadn’t arrived fully (Nigerian time, at least one hour late 😉 )…next thing, the expected question pops up ‘ki le fe ma?’ (what do you want ma) and then they reel out the list of options available…iyan, rice. Then the wait begins, the tray gets carried left, right and center but never at your side, then frustration sets in and in the most extreme cases, some people start calling out ‘ess (in a sort of hissing-like sound) aunty, here! here!’ and I’m usually like patience bro (in my mind anyway) and am i d only one who never finishes party food? (piece of advice, always eat before you go for Nigerian parties)
With the food issues sorted out, wait, does it ever get sorted out, cos people keep on eating and eating (its free food people!), some even put leftovers in black polythene bags to carry it home (no wasting of food!)…and when does the party end, anytime you’re ready to go,just carry your bag and leave 🙂
And don’t we just love elaborate parties, weddings, funerals, birthday parties, even celebration of a new job (o.k maybe that’s not there) anything we have that’s worth a shot, Nigerians would surely give it a try especially if the there are enough resources, I mean, why not! And wait till you see the number of people who would turn up…
We surely are a happy people, but partying, is that in our genes too?
