Today I witnessed an uncommon sight – a man walking and reading, reading and walking. I followed his steps with my eyes, observing his rhythmic and steady pace – one-two, one-two, one step in front of the other. His book lay open before him, held by his left arm, his fingers in the middle, gently hoisting it before his face. 

Across the street from within the building I was seated in, I observed this man. Large transparent doors and a narrow road separated us, creating a significant distance. Moments before he passed, I too was engrossed in reading the Merleau-Ponty Reader for my “Representing Representations/Project of Description” seminar. I happened to catch this fleeting moment just in time before he vanished from the frame of my vision.

He continued his day, reading and walking, walking and reading, seemingly oblivious to the world around him. He walked and read into the endless expanse of time and space. As he passed by, I couldn’t help but think, “What an interesting sight. I should record this…” Perhaps I was also inspired by Merleau-Ponty’s philosophical musings about the eye and the mind.

Well, this man and a brief moment of his day have now become immortalized in these words, confined within this frame of expression. He keeps on walking and reading, reading and walking, in and out of time…
