We sat on the porch
Both of us
Hands clasped between our knees
We didn’t – couldn’t speak
For one straight hour, we did nothing but stare ahead
At the wind ruffling through the trees
Right ahead
At the bird gawking at the sky
We both watched and listened
As the wind brought up the autumn leaves in spirals
Just the same way our lives were unwinding in spirals
Round and round
We both knew it in our hearts
It wouldn’t be long anymore
The winds would settle
And the leaves would fall
And time would stop
And our lives would end.
